    Dr. Edward R. McInnis

    Doctor of Medicine

     

    Dr. Edward R. McInnis, Lt. (N), MD, CCFP, has dedicated over a decade to emergency and trauma medicine and has nearly two decades of experience as a family physician. Beyond his professional commitments, he is a devoted father, an active athlete, a lieutenant (N) in the Canadian Armed Forces, a Navy reservist, and a committed volunteer.

     

    The Early Years

     

    Dr. McInnis was born and raised in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. As the eldest of four siblings, he developed a passion for sports early on, engaging in hockey, baseball, tennis, and golf throughout his youth. He excelled in hockey and baseball, playing at a Junior A level in hockey and being scouted by the Boston Red Sox as a potential pitcher. His athletic interests expanded to include weightlifting as he grew older.

     

    His strong work ethic was evident from a young age; he started managing a paper route at the age of ten and took his first full-time job at McDonald’s when he was just thirteen.

     

    Education, Professional Licensure and Certifications

     

    Dr. McInnis’s academic journey is marked by extensive education and numerous qualifications. He completed his BBA at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1992, followed by a period of travel across the United States. He then pursued further studies at Dalhousie University, where he earned a BSc (Honors) in Biochemistry and Genetics in 1997 and a Certification in Epidemiology in 2002. He entered Dalhousie Medical School in 2000 and graduated with his Doctor of Medicine degree in 2004. He completed his postgraduate studies in Emergency and Family Medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

     

    His professional accreditations include:

    • Licensure by the Medical Council of Canada (MCC).
    • A commissioned rank as Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy.
    • Certification by the Canadian College of Family Physicians (CCFP).
    • He was also promoted to Lieutenant (N) in the Royal Canadian Navy.

     

    Honors and Awards

     

    Throughout his career, Dr. McInnis has received several honors, including the Prince Edward Island Top Medical Student Scholarship, the Burke Certificate for Promise in Family Medicine, and a Special Citation for Meritorious Service in the Canadian Armed Forces. An Honorable Discharge from active service further acknowledged his dedication and service.

     

    Academic Experience

     

    Dr. McInnis has held various academic positions, such as Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Laboratory Studies at Dalhousie University, Senior Post Graduate Clinical Instructor at McMaster University, and Senior Professor and Evaluator at the Canadian Forces School of Physician Assistants at CFB Borden, Ontario.

     

    Serving His Country

     

    He served as a medical officer in the Canadian Armed Forces for nine years and continues to serve as a Class B reservist for the Royal Canadian Navy. His tenure in the military included being deployed as part of the Disaster Assistance Response Team (D.A.R.T.) during Operation PLATEAU and working as a consultant in bio-terrorism medicine. He also served as a clinical instructor and liaison officer for the Canadian Forces Physician Assistant Program.

     

    Clinical Experience and Medical Practice

     

    Dr. McInnis’s clinical career has been robust, including a four-year tenure as an Emergency Physician at McMaster University Hospital and subsequent leadership at the Wasaga/Angus Community Health Center – Family Practice as Director of Care. He joined the Medical Division of the Canadian Armed Forces as a Class B reservist in 2010.

     

    Volunteer Work

     

    Volunteering has been a cornerstone of his life. During medical school, he was active at the Barrington Street Shelter in Halifax, providing medical examinations and support to people experiencing homelessness. He extended his volunteer work to homeless shelters in Hamilton and Toronto, Ontario, where he also contributed to an STD clinic.

     

    A Family Man, A Man of Faith

     

    Dr. McInnis is the father of three daughters and one son. He actively participates in their lives and supports their involvement in sports and the arts. He has volunteered extensively, including coaching minor hockey and assisting in figure skating and dance programs.

     

    He practices his Christian faith alongside his family, regularly attending services at Mapleview Christian Church.
